American comedian Amy Poehler has wiped the floor with a male sports reporter who said women’s sports were not worth watching.
Sports Illustrated journalist Andy Benoit tweeted that not only was the Women’s World Cup not worth watching, but the same was true of all sport involving women.
Big mistake.
It would be a daft and insulting comment to make at the best of times, but particularly foolish given the USA women’s soccer team are down to the last eight of the World Cup, currently taking place in Canada.
Poehler and co-host Seth Myers teamed up to point out a few home truths to Benoit, illustrated with some well chosen clips from both male and female sport.
Funny and true – our favourite combination.
A sheepish Benoit had already taken to Twitter again to apologise for what he described as light-hearted comments that got out of hand.
My sincere apologies for last night’s senseless tweets. I got carried away responding to playful ribbing ….

And he also tipped his hat to Poehler and Myers for the takedown.
Very well played, @sethmeyers and @smrtgrls. http://t.co/brgKgKLHWf Really. I deserved that. Sticking to football now!

Fair play to Benoit for acknowledging his mistake, but we think he will be reminded about his remarks from women involved in sport for some time to come.
I laughed :)..invite any time to step on the ice @andy_benoit. Hopefully your game is better than ur ignorance :)!! https://t.co/omnJLD9WMy

I invite @Andy_Benoit to @profastpitch Championships. Your attitude towards women's sports is offensive to many. pic.twitter.com/8SvG1rPASx
