Villarreal were gifted a golden opportunity to take the lead over Manchester United after Raphael Varane’s poor reading of the game almost cost him dearly.
When Varane was signed from Real Madrid in the summer, Man United fans hailed him as some sort of defensive messiah – which he may well be, but not tonight.
The Frenchman wasn’t at his best in the opening 45 minutes of Man United’s Champions League group stage clash with Villarreal, during which he almost gave the visitors a goal.
As the ball bounced towards Varane, he attempted to intercept but failed to do so and allowed it to trickle through to Paco Alcacer, who was unable to convert the opportunity.

Varane will be thanking his lucky stars that his mistake didn’t directly lead to a goal, especially with Man United already having been defeated in their opening fixture of the group stage.
