Arsenal have said that the club will take the “strongest possible action” against anyone found guilty of online abuse that is linked to their season ticket or membership database.

Other Premier League players were targeted also with Hector Bellerin being subjected to homophobic abuse with Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger being subjected to ‘problematic’ and aggressive posts.

Rudiger revealed that he suffered “immense” racist abuse on social media following the sacking of Frank Lampard last month.

Reports claimed that Rudiger had encouraged the people upstairs to replace Lampard at Stamford Bridge which invited a litany of angry fans to direct racist anger towards him.

Rudiger said: “I cannot control people’s emotions but people should be human beings. Me, I didn’t post anything but the racial abuse was immense. This makes me stronger because I know who I am, I can look in the mirror and I can smile. I know I didn’t do anything so for me this is forgotten.

Following the publishing of the Twitter report a spokesperson for the social media giant said: “There is no room for racist abuse on Twitter and we are resolute in our commitment to ensure the football conversation on our service is safe for fans, players and everyone involved in the game”
