There’s no denying Michael Owen’s ability as a footballer, he was one of the greats and the former Liverpool player terrorised many defenders over the years.
Unfortunately for the 41-year-old that natural ability didn’t transfer over to his commentary skills and the former Real Madrid striker has had some memorable one-liners in his commentary career.
Now, none of us here have ever done commentary so we don’t claim to be experts but we definitely recognise a blooper when we see one and Owen has had a few. Here are his Top 10:
- “Footballers these days often use their feet.”
- “It’s impossible to stop Wayne Rooney when he’s in this kind of mood unless you tackle him like Jagielka did there.”
- “That’s a foul! I mean he never touched him and it’s an obvious dive but he can’t argue with that booking.”
- “What a shot! That’s completely unstoppable but the keeper has got to do better for me.”
- “To score goals in this league you need players who score goals, that’s what it’s all about.”
- “Ask any captain, he’ll tell you you want to shoot your own fans in the second-half.”
- “He’s given the referee no choice but to consider his options.”
- “Do they deserve to win? No, Liverpool do, which is why a draw is a fair result.”
- “That’s a fantastic penalty but he’ll be gutted it went wide.”
- “Whichever team scores more goals usually wins.”
