Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a massive blow ahead of the new season.
James Maddison picked up a nasty injury during the pre-season game against Newcastle United and was stretchered off.
According to a report from The Sun, the 28-year-old midfielder has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Maddison will undergo surgery and will likely be out for the next six to nine months.
He picked up the injury in Son Heung-Min’s farewell match after a challenge with Anthony Elanga, and knew immediately that something was wrong.
He left the Seoul World Cup Stadium on crutches looking very downcast.
A Spurs statement read: “We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee.
“The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul.
“His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team.
“Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way.”
The injury could force Tottenham into signing a new attacking midfielder this summer.
