The World Cup final will always attract millions of viewers, with the quadrennial footballing event culminating with the two best teams of the World in action.

This year’s final was a match for the ages, with Argentina beating France 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling match ended 3-3 after extra time.

Argentina took an early two-goal lead as France disappointed, but with ten minutes to go in normal times, two goals in two minutes from Kylian Mbappe levelled the scores, prompting another 30 minutes to take place.

The game livened up from here, with the two teams putting on a spectacle, and on 108 minutes Lionel Messi restored Argentina’s lead before Mbappe equalised once again to complete his hattrick with a penalty two minutes from time.

La Albiceleste reigned supreme in the shootout to take the victory, with an estimated 14.9 million people tuning in to watch the match.

However, those numbers still did not top the figures reached for the Women’s Euro 2022 final, when 17.4 milllion people watched England beat Germany 2-1 to win their first ever European Championship.

This statistic provides further proof that women’s football is on the rise, as it attempts to keep up with the popularity of the men’s game.
