SHOCKING SCENES during Australian league Melbourne Derby 😳

A football match in Australia between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City was abandoned in the first half following unsavoury scenes initiated by supporters.

City were leading 1-0 thanks to an Aiden O’Neill goal after 11 minutes, but ten minutes later, chaos ensued.

A flare was thrown onto the pitch which was chucked back into the crowd by City goalkeeper Tom Glover, who was then struck in the face by a bin thrown by a supporter.

Fans then ran onto the pitch and clashed with players, prompting the referee to abandon the match.

Following the game, the Australian FA released a statement which read:

β€œFollowing shocking scenes during the first half of the A-League Men’s match between Melbourne Victory FC and Melbourne City FC at AAMI Park on Saturday 17 December, where fans from the Melbourne Victory FC end entered the field of play, Football Australia match officials have abandoned the match in accordance with Law 5.3 of the Laws of the Game in order to protect the integrity of the match.”

β€œSuch behaviour has no place in Australian Football, with a full Football Australia investigation to commence immediately, where strong sanctions will be handed out.”

It is unknown when or if the match will be replayed.
