Second division German side send Bayern crashing out of the DFB Pokal

Bayern Munich have been sent crashing out of the German cup after second division side Holstein Kiel beat them on penalties after a 2-2 draw with the German giants.

Bayern were 2-1 up thanks to goals from Serge Gnabry and a wonderful free-kick by former Manchester City winger Leroy Sané.

The German champions thought they had booked their place in the last 16 until a 95th minute equaliser by Hauke Wahl sent the game to penalties.

Holstein Kiel won 8:7 on penalties in Round 2 of the DFB Pokal, handing the Bundesliga giants their second defeat in 2021 – that’s already more losses in 2021 than they suffered in the whole of 2020.

It’s only Bayern’s second time being knocked out by second division opposition, the first time being the last time they failed to reach the last 16 when they were knocked out by Magdeburg in 2000.

Bayern had a hugely successful 2019-20 season as they went scooped the coveted treble wining both the league and German cup domestically and the Champions League in Europe.

Unfortunately following tonights events there is no hope of lightning striking twice for the Germans.
