Can Romelu Lukaku play for Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup?

Chelsea fans face a nervous face to discover whether Romelu Lukaku will be able to feature against Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night.

Lukaku’s last kick of a ball in a Chelsea shirt was in a penalty shootout against Bayern Munich in the same competition, with the Belgian’s spot-kick having been saved by Manuel Neuer, which handed the Bavarians the trophy.

With Lukaku being the kind of character he is, you imagine he’ll be keen to right that wrong by making the difference for Chelsea on Wednesday night, once he completes his proposed return to Stamford Bridge.

However, the significant, lingering question is – can he actually play?

Well, BenchWarmers understands that Lukaku will be allowed to feature in the UEFA Super Cup as long as he is registered into Chelsea’s squad for the fixture by 11pm on Tuesday evening, the night before the game.

That gives Chelsea the best part of two days to complete the formalities, conduct Lukaku’s medical and have him sign the contract, with it then being down to Thomas Tuchel to decide whether to use him.
