Speaking with Secret Scout, rising Manchester United star Joe Hugill explained why he gave a penalty United had won to Amad Diallo instead of taking it himself.

Hugill is Manchester United U23s regular penalty taker and he had already netted four times in a recent 6-3 victory over bitter rivals Liverpool.

The game was new signing Amad Diallo’s debut for the Red Devil U23s and Hugill explained why he sacrificed him scoring a 5th goal and instead opted to give the chance to Diallo.

“It was the first time I had met Amad! He really wanted the first pen.

“I was like ‘Nah, I’m going to have it!’ When you’re talking, you’re like ‘I need to score now.’ You don’t want a massive argument as well because the other team will see that.

“I was on a hat-trick, so I had to take the first pen, and for the next one, as it was my first time meeting him, I wanted him to feel welcome!”

A lot of talk has been surrounding the young 18-year-old winger since his move to Old Trafford from Atalanta but first-team boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been keeping an eye on goal machine Hugill.

According to the Mirror Solskjaer said: “Four goals by Hugill, he’s a top striker as well, we’re looking forward to seeing his development,” Solskjaer said. “Amad gets a good start and why Joe didn’t take the penalty himself to get five goals I’m going to ask him.”

United announced the signing of 18-year-old Ivorian winger Amad Diallo from Atalanta in January and the exciting youngster has signed a multi-year contract to the end of June 2025, with the option of an extra year.
