Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez has reportedly emerged as a surprise target for Real Madrid.
There is no doubt over the quality of Gomez and how high his ceiling could be, but the fact remains that Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez is Jurgen Klopp’s preferred centre-back pairing.
With Gomez now 24-years-old, he’s no prospect. He ought to be developing into a player capable of starting for both club and country, but doesn’t look likely to get that opportunity at Anfield.
While there is nothing concrete to suggest that Gomez wants out of Liverpool, you could forgive him for listening if there was a proposition worth considering – such as a move to Real Madrid.

According to the Daily Mail, Los Blancos are keeping tabs on the Englishman as they consider the possibility of making a move for him in the 2022 summer transfer window.
Having lost Sergio Ramos to Paris Saint-Germain and Raphael Varane to Manchester United, Florentino Perez is likely to consider a new centre-back high on his list of priorities.
Could Gomez be the man to partner Éder Militão long-term in the Real Madrid defence? Perhaps, but he ought to be wary of the patchy success of Englishmen at the Santiago Bernabeu.
