The Premier League has explained Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly’s straight red card against Wolves.
Michael Oliver gave the 18-year-old his marching orders when he caught Matt Doherty with a deliberate trip.
Usually you would expect a yellow card for a foul like this but Oliver left Arsenal fans stunned by brandishing a red card.
There was speculation that the red card was due to Lewis-Skelly denying a goalscoring opportunity, despite the incident taking place 90 yards from goal.
He’s about 80 yards from goal and it’s a cynical booking AT BEST.
Never a red card in my opinion.
Arsenal have every right to feel aggrieved about that – and they will let us know. 😅

But the Premier League Match Centre account on X clarified the reason.
“The referee’s call of a red card for Lewis-Skelly was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed his challenge to have been serious foul play,” the account wrote.

Users on X formerly Twitter were not exactly thrilled with the update.
One said: ‘For an account that was supposed to be increasing transparency with the decisions made by the officials, you lot are absolutely useless.’
Another added: ‘This incompetence, unprofessionalism and lack of accountability is what will ruin the Premier League long term.
Why watch when refereeing standards are so low and destroying countless games.’
A third commented: ‘Serious foul play? Tripping someone up is now serious foul play apparently…
What the f**k has happened to football.’
A fourth moaned: ‘Chelsea have been on the receiving end of some horrible decisions this season but this one for Arsenal is the worst of the lot. Just f**king get rid of PGMOL.’
