Late goals from substitutes Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood came after the team broke the deadlock from the penalty spot just before half-time when Mata scored from 12 yards.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made 10 changes to his Manchester United side for their third-round Carabao Cup tie at Luton as they looked to get their season up and running.

The Red Devils started their campaign with a 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend and Solskjaer reacted – handing full debuts to goalkeeper Dean Henderson and summer signing Donny Van De Beek.

Only captain Harry Maguire retained his place as the likes of Jesse Lingard, Odion Ighalo and Juan Mata were handed rare starts.

Former United youngster Ryan Tunnicliffe started for the hosts as one of nine alterations made by the Sky Bet Championship outfit.
