Peter Fury claims ‘high-profile’ fighters have ducked son Hughie, accuses boxers of pursuing celebrity status

Peter Fury has bemoaned heavyweight fighters ducking son Hughie and pursuing celebrity status.

Hughie Fury has three losses on his record, to Joseph Parker, Kubrat Pulev and Alexander Povetkin.

Every time he has come within touching distance to the summit of the division, he’s fallen short.

However, back-to-back victories, the most recent of which came in the form of a comprehensive UD win over Mariusz Wach, have gone some way to repairing his reputation.

Yet, no fighter appears keen on stepping into the ring with him, or so has been claimed by his father, Peter Fury.

He’s quoted by Sky Sports saying:

“Everybody realises he’s a lot better than what people say he is, so that’s my opinion.”

“Let me tell you, we’ve offered some high-profile people fights with Hughie – and they’ve looked up and said they’ll fight anyone. But when Hughie is mentioned, they don’t want to fight him, so that’s where it’s at.”

“I don’t want to mention any names, but that’s where it is. We’ll find him an opponent. He’ll be fighting in September anyway.”

“Absolutely [he’s lost respect]. Boxing is becoming a bit of a soap opera. That real fighting culture, there’s only so many around today. A lot of them, they are more into social media and being a celebrity than a boxer.”

The heavyweight division is hugely competitive at current. There’s plenty of fights that fans have the appetite to see, but unfortunately there’s always going to be some left out.

It’s easy for Peter Fury to claim there are big-name heavyweights ducking his son without providing evidence. As is often, if not always, the case in boxing, you have to take it with a pinch of salt…
