Paul Merson urges Premier League star to sign for Manchester United this summer

Paul Merson has urged Declan Rice to leave West Ham this summer and sign for Manchester United, reports the Daily Mail.

Rice, who was released from Chelsea’s academy as a teenager, has established himself as one of the finest midfielders in the Premier League while playing in the claret and blue of West Ham United.

Sadly for the Hammers, even with their recent progress under the stewardship of David Moyes, the assumption is that Rice will depart and sign for one of the league’s big boys sooner rather than later.

Paul Merson believes that he ought to waste no time at all and has encouraged Rice to pursue a move away from East London this summer. Not only that – but he thinks he should join Man United.

“Declan Rice should strike while the iron’s hot and leave West Ham this summer. He’s taken his game to another level this season and is playing like N’Golo Kante now, affecting things at both ends of the pitch.”

“I’d be surprised if Declan Rice is playing for West Ham next season. They have completely punched above their weight for months.”

“Where could he go? Depends what happens at Chelsea and who buys the club. Manchester United would be a good move, but will they get in the Champions League? That’s where Rice wants to play.” [via the Daily Mail]

Man United are likely to be playing Europa League football next season. It’s currently unclear whether they will even finish above Rice’s current employers in the Premier League table this term.

That said, it is undoubtedly a step up, the trouble from Man United’s perspective is how legitimate a chance they have of convincing him to snub his boyhood club, Chelsea, should they be active in the transfer market.
