Oleksandr Usyk reveals why he might go back down to cruiserweight

Oleksandr Usyk has suggested that he might drop back down to cruiserweight… so he doesn’t have to eat so much.

When Usyk moved up to heavyweight, we knew that he was one of the pound-for-pound finest, but how would he measure up against fighters bigger than him?

After two successive victories over Anthony Joshua, it’s safe to say that Usyk has coped relatively well. He has all-but conquered the heavyweight division.

While an undisputed fight with Tyson Fury is thought to be his preferred next tussle, there’s little to suggest that talks are ongoing to make that happen.

Meanwhile, Usyk has suggested that he could drop back down to cruiserweight so that he doesn’t have to eat so much. Quoted by Boxing 24/7, he said:

“I was thinking about returning to cruiserweight and getting a few more of the world belts. You know, being a heavyweight means you have to be really heavy.”

“You must eat a lot. It’s not hard to fight with these giants, but it’s really hard to eat all the time. And now I work much more than I did as a cruiserweight, particularly in the training camps.”

“I had to swim ten kilometres and train hard. At this moment I just want to stop and take a rest. A half of a year of training is hard work. I didn’t see my family for such a long time.”

We’d respect whatever avenue Usyk chose to take, but you just have to hope that he wouldn’t vacate his heavyweight belts, else we’ll never see an undisputed champ…
