Kieran Kingston is set to be announced as the new Cork senior hurling manager in the coming days, Examiner Sport understands.
Kingston, who made his championship debut for Cork in 1985 and hurled with the county until 1990, winning two All-Ireland medals, was meeting with the appointment sub-committee today to finalise his succession of Jimmy Barry-Murphy.
The Tracton clubman had been a selector and later coach under Barry-Murphy, stepping down at the end of 2014 due to work commitments.
He previously led Tracton to the 2010 county Premier IHC final.
Names mentioned as possible selectors include Midleton’s Pat Hartnett as coach, with Diarmuid O’Sullivan (Cloyne), Wayne Sherlock (Blackrock) and Brian Hurley (St Finbarr’s) as selectors.
Hurley had also been a part of Barry-Murphy’s backroom team while Hartnett and O’Sullivan have been involved with underage Cork teams over the past few years.
Hartnett was an All-Ireland medallist in 1986 while O’Sullivan and Sherlock were part of successful teams in 1999, 2004 and ’05.
Hurley was the Cork minor goalkeeper in 1993 and ’94, winning an All-Ireland in the latter year while he was part of the All-Ireland U21-winning panel in 1997.
Meanwhile, Cork GAA chiefs also hope to announce details of the awarding of the contract to rebuild Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the coming days, with one of the country’s largest construction firms set to undertake the job.
