Is Jose Mourinho The Man To Turn Manchester United Around?

Posted by

After a long and quite antagonizing week for all Manchester United fans, the news that Louis Van Gaal will be in charge this weekend certainly didn’t help to lift their spirits. But, with the rumoured arrival of ex Chelsea man Jose Mourinho imminent, we scrutinize whether he’s the man to turn Manchester United around.

Since the days of Sir Matt Busby and particularly Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United have been known for their policy of bringing through youth players and have often succeeded at it, with the ‘Class Of 92’ being a prime example. The appointment of Jose Mourinho would be an excellent one, but the lack of home-grown players in Mourinho’s first elevens at the vast amount of clubs he’s managed brings a concern to Manchester United’s club philosophy. Early this season, under Mourinho’s reign, Chelsea reportedly had 26 players loaned away from the club, including players such as Juan Cuadrado, Mohammed Salah and Patrick Bamford. United have arguably been the best club out of all the Premier League top dogs at bringing through their youth, but would a Mourinho managed United be able to contain this reputation or would the special one continue with these antics?

Another common argument over Mourinho’s tactics include his style of football, which wasn’t popular with rival fans during last seasons Premier League winning campaign. A common problem with Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United this season has been the lack of exciting football produced on the pitch with United leading in the statistics with the most sideways and backwards passes this season. Despite not always being the most attacking and ‘parking the bus’ as it is now referred to these days, Mourinho delivered the title back to Stamford Bridge for the third time in his career including back to back campaigns of the 2004-2005 and 2006-2007 seasons. In response to the boring style of football argument, in 2011-2012, Mourinho, managing Real Madrid, broke the record for the most goals scored in La Liga with 121 which led to Real winning the title for the first time in 4 years. Boring you say?

Pushing aside the negative factors about Jose Mourinho, he’s a natural winner, the passion shown from the side-line is second to none and his list of honours for both club and individual speaks for itself. Between 2003 and 2012, Mourinho did not go a single calendar year without winning at least one trophy, a truly astonishing fact. It also speaks volumes about his trophy winning nature. For many years it has been widely suggested that Mourinho has had his eyes set on the Manchester United job, and with the current situation at the club, Ed Woodward would be missing out if he did not even make contact, the appoint one of the best managers in world football. In terms of his departure from Chelsea this season, it was in no way, shape or form a discredit to his managerial CV, in my opinion the players at Chelsea should be ashamed of the way they played under Jose after winning them a title just a season before and ignoring his unprofessional antics with post match interviews, I’ve always been a fan of him. Jose Mourinho, if appointed, would be the best man to turn the club around and therefore United should act fast before Madrid start sniffing.
