Chelsea Players Should Be Ashamed Of Themselves Following José’s Departure

Seven months ago, back in May, football fans all over the world witnessed José Mourinho and his team crowned as the Premier League champions but, just seven months on, ‘The Special One’ became the sacked one.

After just 16 games this season Mourinho’s men suffered nine losses, three draws and just four wins, compare that to last season and Chelsea lost three times less after all games were played, so what’s changed? The players. Mourinho’s treatment towards Eva Caneiro has been commonly regarded as the key reason behind Chelsea’s failure this season, but does the dismissal of a team doctor transform eleven title winners including last years player of the season, into an average at best side? Not in my mind. The club captain, John Terry, has arguably had his worst season to date, with lack of leadership at the back, likewise with Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and many more and the form represented on the pitch can only be down to the players, who many, like Eden Hazard, are earning around £200,000 a week. For that sort of money, you should be able to perform week in week out no matter what the media writes because that’s what you’re paid to do, but nowadays some footballers, without mentioning any names *cough Hazard cough* forget that.

A three times Premier League winner and two time Champions League winner is now jobless due to the disgusting and quite shambolic performances of the squad he managed and in my opinion, they should be ashamed of themselves. For all that he has done for Chelsea, Mourinho deserves more than a quick Instagram post from the players that were accountable for their season, and José’s job. It’s more proof that today’s generation of football has become a business and the loyalty plus work ethic of one man is second best to the clubs cash inflow. It is not ideal when the Premier League champions are sitting in 16th, but there comes a time when the performances are down to the players on the pitch rather than the man in the suit, and this was one of them. For me, the final straw was against high flying Leicester, when Eden Hazard appeared to fake an injury. If indeed he did, it shows the pathetic attitude that he doesn’t need to play his part, well let me tell you, one season being golden boy isn’t enough at this level.

As a Manchester United fan, I didn’t always enjoy Mourinho’s time with Chelsea, but there is no debate that Mourinho is one of the best managers in world football, and the blue of London may never see a man like him again. The sacking of Mourinho is a huge loss not just to Chelsea but to the whole of the Premier League, and I for one will miss him.
