Fabrizio Romano confirms Newcastle United’s ambitious attempt to sign Barcelona star

Newcastle United made an approach to try and sign Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele, according to BenchWarmers columnist Fabrizio Romano.

The Magpies are in a relegation scrap at the bottom of the Premier League, with what is now the richest football club on the planet in grave danger of being relegated to the Championship.

You imagine the Saudi consortium in charge of Newcastle will be splashing the cash in January in a desperate attempt to save them from dropping down into the second tier.

While that feels like a foregone conclusion, we didn’t expect to see the Geordies shopping in Barcelona, but it appears they are aiming high in their hunt for mid-season reinforcements.

According to information provided by reliable BenchWarmers columnist Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle attempted to convince Ousmane Dembele to sign for them a few weeks back.

Dembele is out of contract with Barcelona in the summer, so you can hardly blame Newcastle for trying their luck, but it doesn’t look as though they’ve had any sort of success.

Newcastle ought to focus on bringing in Premier League proven players who they feel can help them beat the drop. With Dembele’s patchy injury record, it would’ve been an expensive risk.
