NEW contender tipped for Manchester United managerial position

Darren Bent has bizarrely tipped Italy manager Roberto Mancini to take the reins at Manchester United ahead of next season.

The Man United managerial situation remains unclear, with Ralf Rangnick unlikely to be offered the opportunity to retain his place in the dugout beyond the end of the season.

Multiple contenders have been revealed in the media, from Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag to the long-linked Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

However, Darren Bent, speaking on talkSPORT, threw a new, slightly bizarre, name into the equation – Roberto Mancini.

“He has proved he can do it in this country and I think it is vital that he has that Premier League experience. He has gone on to win a massive trophy with Italy in the Euros, so you can’t question his pedigree in terms of winning things.”

“If you’re looking for a winner, I suppose the counter argument is that people will say Jose [Mourinho] was a winner and it ended quite badly. He did win trophies for United, but people would say he left the club in a worst state.”

Not only is Mancini a former Man City manager, which would all but rule him out of the running for the United job, but he failed to take Italy to the World Cup in Qatar.

Granted, the Euro 2020 triumph was commendable, but to have not been able to follow it up with World Cup qualification suggests it was nothing more than a fluke.
