Natalie Sawyer gives opinion on Gareth Southgate staying as England manager

This morning, the FA released a statement confirming that Gareth Southgate will remain in his position as England boss, meaning the 52-year old will take charge of the Three Lions at Euro 2024 with his contract set to expire later that year.

Before his stay was confirmed, several names were banded about as to who may have replaced him as England manager, from Mauricio Pochettino to Brendan Rodgers but the FA can now relax without having to worry about a substitute.

On Talksport following the announcement, presenter Natalie Sawyer admitted she was pleased to see the news that Southgate will be remaining in charge while questioning who would have replaced him if he did leave.

I can understand why some people won’t be delighted by this news, but I also think, who are the alternatives?

People have thrown out names like Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel, but I’m not sure if they are the right people to lead England. Southgate has clearly developed a bond with this team and that is more important than anything.”

For me, its a no-brainer and he has to stick in this role.”

With 18 months until Euro 2024, Southgate’s decision to stick with England and not walk which would have raised more questions around the team could turn out to be a very wise decision in the long run.
