Paul Merson explains damning reason why rival fans are supporting Manchester United

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has claimed that rival fans are supporting Manchester United because they want Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to stay in the job.

Man United are in the midst of a crisis, with the 5-0 defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday turning up the heat on manager Solskjaer.

The Norwegian will be taking charge of United’s clash with Tottenham this weekend, but will be well aware that defeat could spell the end of his time at Old Trafford.

Paul Merson, writing in his weekly column for Sky Sports ahead of this weekend’s round of Premier League fixtures, has not held back on his assessment of Solskjaer.

Though the he may not have much support left among the United faithful, Merson rightly points out that he has plenty of supporters at rival clubs.

“Everybody in and around the race for the top four and Europe – West Ham, Arsenal, Leicester – will be sweating on Manchester United winning at Tottenham.”

“The damning thing is they will want Manchester United to win so that Solskjaer stays.”

As harsh as it may sound, it’s absolutely true. Rival fans will be fearing what this Man United squad could achieve with Antonio Conte or Zinedine Zidane at the helm.

Solskjaer is quite obviously a limited manager who is not as tactically capable as his counterparts at the top end of the Premier League table.

Man United are going to be shackled to mediocrity until he departs – which rivals fans will absolutely love to see.
