The 29 year old Dubliner Matt Doherty has rubbished the thought that himself and former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho didn’t see eye to eye during the Portuguese time at the North London club. Doherty was speaking to the media ahead of Tuesday’s match against Hungary.

“I definitely got a fair crack of the whip. I still played 25, 26, 27 games, that’s a lot of games in the season to play so I definitely got a fair crack.
Look, I had a great relationship with him. He was my neighbour for the whole year where I lived, so the relationship between me and him was fine. I thought he was a great guy.
Unfortunately these things happen in football. He’s Jose Mourinho and he’s one of the best ever, so I’ve got nothing but praise for him…
I don’t think we were burnt out, he was only there for 18 months. I think if it was three or four years then it could be a different conversation.
We just weren’t getting the results for him. The manager always seems to be the one that loses his job, but as players we were the ones on the pitch and we weren’t able to get the results for him.
It’s a shame because he’s one of the best managers ever.”
