Former Liverpool player, Robbie Fowler has backed manager Jurgen Klopp and criticised the club for not spending more in January.
The Merseyside club have performed far below expectations this season and looks like a shadow of the team we saw last year. Many expected Liverpool to push Manchester City all the way if not go on to win the title themselves.
But at the halfway mark, they now sit mid-table and well off the Champions League places. The club has been estimated by injuries and they had a chance to bring in new bodies in January but passed on the opportunity.
They brought in one player, Cody Gakpo but are still in need of more players specifically in midfield.
Robbie Fowler has now backed Klopp and urged his former club to spend in the market.
âI think Jurgen is well within his rights to think they can progress and grow and when you are building strong teams â or when youâre top of the league â itâs about strengthening in the areas you think [you need it]. Or not even the areas, just strengthening all aspects of the side.â He told the Liverpool Echo.
âThat is one of the things that I think annoys me now more with football clubs is actually youâre looking at players to come in and I donât even think youâre looking at specific positions, I think you should be bringing players in just to keep everyone on their toes.
âIf youâre resting on your laurels, if you like, then someone can come in and take your place in the team and do that job to make it hard for you to get back into the team. And I think all clubs who have aspirations should be doing that and it is about signing elite players.
âCertainly when youâre on top of your game, I donât mean this in a disrespectful manner, but if youâre not signing players, I think you are going backwards.â
