Lionel Messi has confirmed he will remain with Barcelona following weeks of speculation about a potential departure from the club.
In an interview with Goal, the 33-year-old said he would “continue at the club”.
Messi made his debut for the Catalan giants at 16 in 2003 and he has gone on to become one of the greatest players ever to grace the sport.
There had been much discussion over a clause in his contract that would have allowed him to leave for free at the end of this season.
However, Barcelona contended this, claiming that the prolonged season due to the Covid-19 pandemic did not count in the clause. According to the club, this meant it expired in May.
Barcelona’s season ended on August 14th when they were knocked out of the Champions League in a humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich, who went on to win the competition.
