Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo has revealed that he was attacked during a burglary at his home, leaving him beaten up in the face.

The Portugal international has been a revelation for Man City this campaign, scoring three goals and providing seven assists from full-back. Whether it be at right-back or left-back, he has become an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s plans at the Etihad.

It does, however, remain to be seen whether Cancelo will be available for selection as Man City take on Arsenal in the lunchtime kick-off on New Years Day after he revealed that “four cowards” had broken into his home and attacked him.

Man City released a statement soon after the Cancelo revelations hit social media revealing that they were “shocked and appalled” and would be doing everything in their power to assist the player in his time of need.

While he has been cut on the face and lost some valuables during the home invasion, we are thankful that no more serious damage was done to Cancelo and his family escaped the incident unharmed, if shaken.

We hope that, as he puts it, the “cowards” responsible for the burglary and attack can be swiftly identified and are punished with the full force of the law. Incidents of this nature are happening all too often to Premier League footballers…
