Jamie Carragher calls Rio Ferdinand ‘a clown’ during Champions League coverage

Jamie Carragher branded Rio Ferdinand a clown whilst covering the Champions League semi-final between Milan and Inter.

Inter were originally awarded a penalty in the 30th minute after Lautaro Martinez appeared to be brought down in the box.

But, after being sent to review the incident on the pitch side monitor by VAR, the referee reversed his decision.

Ferdinand who was working for BT Sports believed it was a ‘stonewall’ penalty but the former Liverpool star completely disagreed.

He said, “I think anyone out there who is watching the replay and seeing what VAR do and still believe that is a penalty, they must be a clown.”

Upon hearing former teammate, Steven Gerrard’s opinion, Carragher back-tracked slightly.

Carragher said, He replied: “He was an attacking player, wasn’t he? He was liable a little bit himself under a little bit of contact – always contact, never a dive. I understand where he is coming from.”

“But as a defender, we have to stick together don’t we and I just felt people were getting a little bit carried away.”

Carragher’s fellow pundit Micah Richards pressed him: “Name names.”

And Carragher responded, “Rio Ferdinand. I’m happy to call him a clown!”
