England’s strength in depth and their squad for the upcoming European Championship is simply unbelievable, there’s no getting away from that. The question has to be asked, is now the time for England to finally deliver at International level and ‘bring football home’ by winning a major tournament. The age profile is perfect with some good young players and some older ones and leaders like Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson etc… But at the same time, not too old and good experience having reached the final four of the World Cup back in 2016, losing out to Croatia after extra time with Mario Mandžukić getting the winner.
What really cost England that day against Croatia was the lack of a World Class midfielder compare that to Luka Modrić who went on to win the Ballon d’or later that year due to his excellence in the tournament. England can’t be found wanting in the centre of midfield this time round with the likes of Phil Foden, Mason Mount and former Irish youths player Jack Grealish all at Gareth Southgate’s disposal.

Is Gareth Southgate up to the job though, we all remember how Southgate got the job, having come in for the vastly experienced Sam Allardyce after Big Sam found himself caught up in a corruption scandal. I really would have loved to see how Allardyce would have done as it’s a job he always wanted since he first started coaching with Limerick FC. Sadly for the former Bolton Wanderers manger it wasn’t to be and the young English man and former Middlesbrough midfielder Gareth Southgate took full advantage.
There’s four areas I believe where England will be found wanting, I would worry about their goalkeeper, defence and is their young manager as good as the English hope? I 100% agree give the job to an English man if at all possible, a former player and someone that is doing it for more than the pay packet. And finally the media and their fans, I’m sorry but sometimes the English fans can be quick to turn on their own team!
England deserve a lot of credit for their heroics at the last World Cup, actually winning a penalty shoot-out and getting to the final four. England did have an unusual easy run to get to where they did though and I wonder if they had a tougher group would they have got as far as they did?
The 13th of June looms large for England and it’s fans and if they fail to get off to good start things could get ugly, on the other hand England do have the quality and ability to go all the way, it’s just do they have the bottle to do…
