Excellent news for Liverpool as influential figure reaches agreement in principle over new three-year deal

Jordan Henderson has agreed in principle a new contract with Liverpool, according to The Athletic.

Henderson has been one of the most influential players in Liverpool’s recent history, captaining the Reds to glory in both the Champions League and Premier League.

At the age of 31, he’s no spring chicken, but the former Sunderland man still has plenty to offer, both on the field of play and behind the scenes in the dressing room.

With Henderson’s contract running down, Jurgen Klopp will no doubt have been desperate to ensure he was offered an extension. As per The Athletic, that has now been agreed.

The report claims that Henderson has reached an agreement in principle with Liverpool for a new three-year extension, with the option for a fourth if he names a certain number of appearances.

Jordan Henderson captained Liverpool to the Premier League title

As much as Liverpool ought to be focusing on bringing the average age of the squad down and strengthening for the future, it’s integral that they keep players with Henderson’s experience around.

Henderson had a difficult start to life at Anfield but has gone on to write his name into Liverpool’s history books with his influence in the most successful period in the club’s recent history.

The England international even went one step further than club legend Steven Gerrard by wearing the armband as Liverpool won the Premier League title.

He deserves the same amount of loyalty and respect shown to him as the club showed to Gerrard in the latter years of his career. If The Athletic are to be believed, he’ll get it.
