Harry Redknapp makes BOLD claim regarding Lionel Messi’s footballing status

Lionel Messi is preparing to lead his country into their sixth World Cup final as they face reigning world champions France at Lusail Stadium tomorrow.

Messi goes into the final on five goals at the tournament, level with Kylian Mbappe as the battle between the pair looks set to make for fantastic viewing.

This will be Messi’s second shot at World Cup glory after Argentina got to the final at Brazil 2014, losing 1-0 to Germany.

Writing for the Sun, Harry Redknapp believes that even if Messi wins the World Cup, the “Greatest of all time” debate will still not be laid to rest.

If the little guy lifts the World Cup on Sunday, it will be a great way to top off an amazing career.

“But it won’t stop the arguments about whether he is better than Cristiano Ronaldo, let alone where he stands in the all-time debate.

Redknapp went on to compare Messi and Ronaldo to past greats Pele and Diego Maradona saying the pair were also “kicked from pillar to post back in their day.”

That’s a big reason why it’s hard and unfair to make comparisons across the years.”

Sunday’s final promises to be a match for the ages, with kick-off between Argentina and France at 15:00 BST.
