George Groves: Oleksandr Usyk is the best heavyweight ‘by a country mile’ and would beat Tyson Fury

Tyson Fury’s highly criticised bout with Derek Chisora ended in a third victory for the reigning heavyweight champion, and attention has now shifted to who Fury may fight next.

Joe Joyce, Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk are the most recognisable names being mentioned, and George Groves has backed the latter to win the fight, should the Ukrainian get his chance.

in an interview with Boxing UK, the former super middleweight champion said: “I’m such an Usyk fan, I don’t know if he is big enough to challenge Fury if Fury’s really on it and up for it. But, when it comes to ability, Usyk’s the best heavyweight in the world by a country mile, in my opinion.”

Groves was then pushed to make a prediction for the potential fight, to which he answered: “I don’t know. I’ll just go Usyk because I’m an Usyk fanboy.”

It would undoubtedly be an exciting watch. Usyk may lack size, but he is an intelligent fighter, with speed and mobility on his side. That technical ability was enough to seal the victory against Anthony Joshua earlier on this year, but Fury represents an even larger, and even more skilful opponent.
