FA chair calls Gareth Southgate to deliver verdict over future as England manager

FA chair Debbie Hewitt has reportedly called Gareth Southgate to deliver a verdict over his future as England manager.

The Three Lions endured a rather dismal international break, including a sobering 4-0 defeat to international minnows Hungary. It left many Three Lions fans calling for Southgate’s head.

Despite Southgate having taken England further in the World Cup and European Championships than they have been for many a year, there can be no denying how strong a squad he has at his disposal.

You could be forgiven for wondering what a manager of a higher calibre could achieve with this crop of players – but it doesn’t look as though we’re going to find out any time soon.

According to a report published by the Daily Mail, FA chair Debbie Hewitt called Southgate to reassure him that there is no question mark over his England future ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

Southgate appears to have the full support and backing of those pulling the strings above him, despite England’s poor form in the build-up to international football’s biggest stage this winter.

While that may well be the case, for now, Southgate will be aware that a poor tournament could prove to be the end of his tenure as England manager. He needs to deliver in Qatar.
