Galway Races makes crowdless return

The Galway Races normally brings thousands of spectators to Ballybrit each year.

The annual Galway Races will kick off today, but Covid-19 restrictions mean the meet will take place behind closed doors.

The week-long festival normally welcomes 130,000 people to Ballybrit, but the decision was taken in April to exclude the public from proceedings.

Trainer Willie Mullins will be hoping to emulate his success last year when he had 10 winners, including Great White Shark in the Connacht Hotel Handicap.

The first race today is the Claregalwayhotel.ie Maiden at 4.10pm, with Wembley favourite to win.
