Donie Halleran, from Tuam, was a goalkeeper for Galway and notably played several matches in the All-Ireland minor football in 2019.
Donie’s club was Cortoon Shamrocks GAA who said he was “loved by all who knew him”.
Sharing their sadness at the news on Wednesday, they said: “It is with deep shock and sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our player and club member Donie Halleran.
“Donie represented our club with distinction and was goalkeeper on our 2020 Intermediate championship winning team playing alongside his uncle David. We were so proud to watch Donie also represent Galway at minor and U20 level. Donie always had a smile on his face and was loved by all who knew him.
Galway Footballer’s Homepage also shared a lovely message: “We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Donie Halleran’s family and friends at this very difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
