There was a lot of talk this weekend of the miss use of funds from the association, especially when everyone is finally after seeing that we don’t need all these stadiums around the country. Especially when they are’t being used half the time and are rarely full to capacity.
Now people and one journalist in particular believes it’s time to start paying players for play. Conor McKenna took to his twitter to share his opinion on the matter, see the discussion below and some of the comments to go with it ..
39 million euro spent on county teams last year.
Record level which would suggest that there are people getting full time salaries.
I think it's time for players to get something.
GAA certainly would not survive at county level without players.

There were a few instances where LGFA and camogie players were getting no expenses at all, while management teams were getting them.
That is very wrong – players are who deserve any reimbursement first.

Would bankrupt the GAA in five years and would end the county system even faster.
I’m not sure if it’s financially sustainable but I think it’s not right that players are getting nothing if others are getting salaries.
Ah stop. Almost 40mill to run county teams last year & then a full wage bill of 64 Inter County teams on top of that. What would they do when IC season is over then, players go back to their jobs? Just wouldn’t/couldn’t work, not even a topic IMO
Why can’t players get some of that 40 million instead of paying non players a salary. Reduce spending on other areas and increase player expenses. Players only accounted for a small fraction of total expenditure last season.
It would be hard to create a professional model that works, you would need a season that ran for 9-10 months of the year, how would that impact the club game. On those getting paid, do you get rid of gdas gpos etc if so how do we compete with other sports.
GDA and GPO money is budgeted for and is taxed, etc. I have no problem with that as it’s people’s livelihood and permanent employment
Conor, why not flip it back the other way – time to stop the madness of the spends on intercounty teams. It’s less we need to spend rather than more. And look at the counties who are struggling already, how would they have any hope of doing this?
