Former Premier League referee gives his surprising thoughts on controversial Man Utd goalšŸ¤”

A former Premier League referee has given his opinion on Manchester Unitedā€™s controversial first goal in the Manchester derby on Saturday.Ā

Manchester United have shown just how far theyā€™ve come since Erik ten Hag took over when they beat bitter rivals, Manchester City on Saturday.

Jack Grealish opened the scoring in the 53rd minute before Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford won the game for the Red Devils. It was back-and-forth fame but wasnā€™t without controversy.

For Manchester Unitedā€™s equalizing goal, Rashford was offside when he was played in behind the City defense. However, the winger did not touch the ball before Fernandes scored so the initial offside was overruled by the referee.

There was outrage from City fans who believed that he was interfering with play and Ten Hag even admitted that he wouldā€™ve felt hard done by if he was in Pep Guardiolaā€™s shoes.

However, former Premier League referee, Chris Foy wrote in his Daily Mail column that the right decision was made.

ā€œItā€™s no surprise that opinions are divided overĀ Manchester Unitedā€™s equaliser but I can see absolutely no reason why the goal should not have stood,ā€ he wrote.

ā€œAssistant Darren Cann raised his flag after Bruno Fernandes put the ball in the net, becauseĀ Marcus RashfordĀ had been in an offside position when the ball was played through.

ā€œReferee Stuart Attwell consulted Cann and between them they agreed that Rashford had not touched the ball nor had any impact on a City player.

ā€œThe offside law, Law 11, says a player can be penalised if heā€™s interfering with an opponent by making an obvious action ā€˜which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball.'ā€
