Ex-Manchester United defender Wes Brown has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson gave him a payrise in his early days with Manchester United after the manager found out he would get the bus everywhere.

Brown made 362 appearances for United but told a story about something that happened before he even signed a professional contract with the club.

Speaking on the Football Social Daily podcast, Brown said: “I turned pro at 17 and started playing at 18, and in that time I still hadn’t signed another contract, so I was probably on about £250 a week.

And then I had a fight on a bus going home because I got the bus everywhere.

Alex Ferguson found out and he said to me ‘what the f*** are you doing on the bus?‘ ”

I said, ‘I’ve always got the bus, boss’ and he’s shouting at me for getting a bus and telling me to get a taxi.”

I explained to him that I couldn’t afford a taxi because that would be £14 a day, £7 from my house to Salford.”

Alex Ferguson was not happy with Brown getting the bus instead of a taxi

Brown said he admitted to Ferguson that he was still living with his mum, before the Scotsman stopped giving him both barrels.

He stopped shouting at me after that. And he was like ‘yeah, well we’ll sort that out’, so he gave me a payrise!”

Brown went on to have a glittering career at Old Trafford, winning two Champions Leagues, five Premier Leagues and two FA Cups.
