“It is not a good rule” – Marco van Basten calls for major reform which would change football forever

Dutch football legend Marco van Basten has sensationally called for the offside rule to be scrapped, during an exclusive interview with Sky Sports.

van Basten is widely regarded one of the best footballers of all-time, so when he speaks, you’re inclined to listen.

However, his suggestion during this interview with Sky Sports is pretty laughable, with his solution for fixing the situation surrounding offsides being to scrap them in their entirety.

Here’s what the former Ajax and AC Milan striker had to say on the matter during his interview with Sky Sports.

“I am still very curious about the offside rule because I am convinced that it is not a good rule. At least I would like to trial it to show that football is also possible without the offside rule. I am convinced that football would be better without it.”

Wholesale changes to football are usually met with contempt, with the fanbase in the sport notoriously resistant to change.

In this case, though, it’s not a matter of the mans being stubborn, it’s quite simply a bad idea.

Offsides are there for a reason, to prevent goal-hanging and to give defenders a fighting chance.

Naturally, as a former striker, he’s not overly concerned about that.
