When footballers retire they are often left to live their best life after enjoying their careers but in some instances, this doesn’t always go to plan. This is the case with ex-Charlton defender Richards Rufus, who is set to face prison time over a trading scam.
The 47-year old, who spent his entire career with Charlton between 1993 and 2004, is believed to have scammed friends and family members, promising them hefty returns of up to 60% a year.
Southwark Crown Court heard during the trial that he also received £15millon from the Kingsway International Christian Centre, a church for whom he was a trustee.

Found guilty of three counts of fraud, Rufus claimed he did not use any of the money he gained for personal use.

The total value of the fraud he has been convicted of is said to be just under £8million.
Judge Dafna Spiro admitted that Rufus’ sentence is likely to be “one of custody.”
It’s certainly not the best way to end 2022 for Rufus, who seems to have been successfully punished for his actions.
