David Alaba greeted in Madrid by archaic headline from newspaper Marca

Welcome to Spain, David Alaba. The Real Madrid new-boy has been greeted by an archaic headline from local publication Marca.

Alaba is one of the most successful active footballers in the world, as well as one of the best defenders in the business.

There’s a reason that Real Madrid positioned themselves at the front of the queue for his signature when his contract situation with Bayern Munich became complicated.

Alaba has now finished his post-Euro 2020 holiday and will be training with Carlo Ancelotti and co ahead of the new season. He’s likely to be Real Madrid’s marquee acquisition this summer.

Still, that doesn’t appear to have earned him much respect from the local media, with Marca running a headline which describes him as ‘The black Sergio Ramos…’

It’s not clear exactly why Marca decided to bring race into the conversation, but it doesn’t reflect particularly well on them considering we’re now in 2021 and they ought to know better.

There’s also the argument that Alaba has been hugely successful in his career and need not be compared to anyone – not even the high and mighty Sergio Ramos, but that’s beside the point.
