Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean broke the Irish 1000m record in Monaco this evening.
The previous record was set by Sonia O’Sullivan 27 years ago. Mageean ran the distance in 2:31:06, finishing with the bronze medal.
O’Sullivan previously set the record with a time of 2:34:66.
Kenyan Faith Kipyegon won the race with a time of 2:29.15 while Scotland’s Laura Muir set a British record in second with a finishing time of 2:30.82.
This is just the latest impressive achievement in Mageean’s career, she previously won European medals, a world junior medal and made it to last year’s World Championship final in the loaded 1500m.
O’Sullivan congratulated Mageean on Twitter shortly after the race.
