Chelsea Womens’ Beth England breaks WSL record in thumping win

Chelsea Women beat Leicester City Women 9-0 at the King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon to fire themselves to the top of the WSL table.

Braces from Jessie Fleming and Fran Kirby and strikes from Guro Reiten, Niamh Charles, Sam Kerr and Beth England gave Chelsea victory, as they came up one goal short of their record WSL win when they put nine past the same opponents back in March.

Despite coming close to breaking one record, another was broken as England overtook Chelsea team mate Sam Kerr and Manchester United forward Rachel Williams for the most headed goals in the history of the Women’s Super League.

England scored her 17th headed goal in the WSL, one more than both Kerr and Williams who are both tied on 16.

England’s header made it 7-0 with 15 minutes to go, as she nodded in from close range, converting an Alsu Abdullina cross.

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes will be hoping for a similar performance from her side next weekend when they face Reading on Sunday evening.
