Chelsea identify France international midfielder as top transfer target

Chelsea are reportedly keeping tabs on AS Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

The Blues have invested heavily into the squad in recent seasons and currently have the largest wage bill in the Premier League. However, you still feel as though they are lacking when it comes to challenging Manchester City for the title.

If Thomas Tuchel’s men are going to give Man City, Liverpool and any other possible contenders a run for their money in the 2022/23 campaign, they will have to have to splash even more cash either this month, in the summer or both.

According to a report published by Goal, AS Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni could be a target.

The 21-year-old has impressed in Ligue 1 and has already been drafted into the French National Team as a result. Chelsea do not have a conventional defensive midfielder in their squad at current, signing Tchouameni would fill that void.

Tuchel does have both Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour returning from loan at the end of the season, but it remains to be seen whether he’d be willing to keep both around alongside N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho.

The report does note that it’s very much Tchouameni OR Declan Rice from Chelsea’s perspective – they won’t be signing both. Perhaps there’ll be a couple of Premier League clubs hoping it is the Frenchman that they choose…
