Chelsea have been hit with a MAJOR injury blow, with wing-back Ben Chilwell set to miss the rest of the season.
Chilwell was a key figure for Chelsea last season after signing from Leicester City. The Englishman started, and starred, in the Champions League final, in which Chelsea were triumphant.
However, having not played a minute for England at Euro 2020, Chilwell returned to Chelsea to find himself behind Marcos Alonso in the pecking order. He had to work hard to get himself back in the team – and succeeded.
In six Premier League appearances this campaign, Chilwell netted four goals and provided one assist, quite the return from a player who was playing at wing-back. Then, disaster struck.
The 25-year-old suffered a knee injury, which was later reported to be damage to his anterior cruciate ligament, but only a partial tear. Chelsea left Chilwell to recover and decided to re-assess it at a later date.
Unfortunately, news has broken today, as is reported by Goal, that Chilwell will require surgery and will subsequently miss what remains of the Premier League season – and potentially the start of the next.
Chelsea will presumably be forced into the market in January in search of cover in that area, while also having the option to recall either Emerson or Ian Maatsen.
Get well soon, Ben!
