Chelsea have reportedly made a player-plus-cash bid for Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt.
Chelsea are on the hunt for defensive reinforcements. This is perhaps the worst-kept secret in the transfer market at current, with the Blues having lost both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
Many a name has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with Sevilla’s Jules Kounde understood to be the closest to signing along the dotted line with the world champions this summer.
However, a new player has emerged as a frontrunner the step into Thomas Tuchel’s back-line, with Chelsea believed to have submitted an official player-plus-cash bid in their efforts to sign him.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea are working on a deal to bring Matthijs de Ligt to Stamford Bridge. It’s believed they have offered Timo Werner plus around £26m to Juventus.
That bid is understood to have fallen short of the Old Lady’s expectations, but Chelsea are expected to return with an offer closer to £40m plus Werner – they really want de Ligt.
de Ligt himself would be open to joining Chelsea, while Werner and Juventus also have a mutual liking. Whether a deal will be able to be struck is something we’ll have to wait and see.
