Champions League final likely to be held in new country as Wembley talks hit an impasse

The Champions League final is looking likely to be played in Portugal, rather than England or Turkey, according to Sky Sports.

The final of this season’s competition, which will see Manchester City and Chelsea go toe-to-toe for the biggest prize on offer in club football, was initially due to take place in Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium.

However, as is mentioned in Sky Sports’ report, Turkey has since been placed on the UK government’s ‘red list’, and with two English sides set to compete in the fixture, it would make little sense to continue with plans to host it there.

The Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul was initially supposed to host the Champions League final.

As Sky Sports write, the UK government were hoping to get the game moved to Wembley, but negotiations to do so hit an impasse, which has left it looking likely the game will be played in Portugal.

While it would be a disappointment not to be able to host an all-English final at Wembley, with fans in attendance, Portugal, which is on the ‘green list’ is an acceptable alternative.

It remains to be seen at this point whether any fans of either side would be able to attend.
