Card-happy Spanish referee hits headlines once again with La Liga match performance

Antonio Mateu Lahoz has attracted media attention once again with his refereeing display in his home country after becoming a popular figure during the Qatar World Cup.

Lahoz was sent home from the World Cup following the quarter-final match between Argentina and Holland, where he produced 15 yellow cards and a red and he continued this card-happy tradition upon his return to his native Spain.

Barcelona and Espanyol faced off on New Years’ Eve, as Lahoz brandished 13 yellows and two reds during the game and yesterday in the Copa Del Rey clash between Sevilla and Linares Deportivo, it took him just under twenty minutes to send Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli off after the Argentinian kicked up a fuss on the touchline.

The dismissal of Sampaoli didn’t affect his players however as Sevilla went on to win 5-0, with Morocco’s World Cup star Youssef En-Nesyri netting a hattrick and ex-Tottenham man Erik Lamela also finding himself on the scoresheet.
