Canelo Alvarez comments on possibility of moving up to unify another division

Canelo Alvarez, speaking ahead of his bout with Caleb Plant this weekend, has revealed he’s open to the idea of fighting Artur Beterbiev at 175.

Canelo, who has won world titles in four weight classes, will be taking to the ring this weekend against Plant in hope of becoming the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world.

The Mexican will be fully focused on the task at hand on Saturday night, but has been quizzed on where he could go after the bout with Plant is out of the way.

Were Canelo to be defeated there would inevitably be a rematch on the cards, but once Plant is out of the way once and for all, a bout with Beterbiev could be on the cards.

Beterbiev is the current holder of the WBC and IBF light-heavyweight titles. Canelo, quoted by boxingnews24, has not ruled out moving up in weight to be unified champion in another weight class.

“No, not crazy. I love the idea. I love challenges. I like [to fight bigger guys] because I know what to do in there, so it’s easy for me.”

Canelo will already go down as one of the pound-for-pound greats when he calls time on what has been a truly phenomenal boxing career.

The frightening thing is that he’s as good as he’s ever been and he’s showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. The best may still be to come.

Were to Canelo fight Beterbiev and triumph, he’d then have to face Joe Smith Jr. and Dmitry Bivol to become the undisputed light heavyweight champion of the world.
