Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders unification bout set for biggest boxing audience since pandemic began

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders will be taking place in front of 60,000 fans in May – the largest boxing audience since the coronavirus pandemic rocked the world.

Canelo is widely considered the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet, having lost just once in 58 fights – to Floyd Mayweather, one of the greatest ever to do it.

As reported by the Daily Mail, he will be going toe-to-toe with Billy Joe Saunders in hope of winning the WBO super-middleweight title and unifying the division, though the 30-0 Englishman will be hoping to cause an upset.

It’s a fight that deserves an audience, rather than being played out in Eddie Hearn’s backyard, and in quotes carried by the Daily Mail, Hearn has confirmed that it’s going to have one:

“It’s an absolute honour to bring this huge event to the AT&T Stadium.”

“Last year Canelo missed out on his historic Cinco De Mayo fight, and to bring over 60,000 fans together at this iconic stadium this year is a dream come true.”

The logistics behind having such a large crowd in a stadium in less than two months time still look difficult, with the pandemic still not being over, despite large forward strides on the vaccination front.

However, the AT&T Stadium’s full capacity is, at least, 80,000, so you imagine all necessary precautions will be taken to ensure that fans will remain as socially distanced as possible throughout the duration of the card.
